Why Your Google Ads Conversions Show Zero (and What It's Costing You)
Your phone is ringing. Forms are coming in. But Google Ads says you got zero conversions this month.
Either your ads aren't working at all, or Google Ads can't see the results. It's usually the second one. Here's why it happens, what it costs, and what to do about it.
Zero conversions doesn't always mean zero results
Google Ads only knows about a conversion if something tells it. That "something" is either a Google Ads tag on your website or a key event imported from Google Analytics 4 (GA4). If neither is set up correctly, Ads reports zero, even if your ads are bringing in real customers.
The most common causes
1. The conversion was never set up in Google Ads. Linking Google Analytics and Google Ads is only half the job. You also have to create the conversion action in Ads and import it. Many accounts are linked but have nothing imported.
2. The event isn't a key event in GA4. Google only allows events marked as key events in GA4 to be imported into Ads. If your form event exists but isn't marked, Ads can't use it.
3. The conversion is set to "Secondary." Secondary conversions show up in the "All conv." column but not the main "Conversions" column, and Google doesn't use them for bidding. An action set to Secondary by mistake can make your account look like it has zero conversions.
4. The tag works in testing but not for real visitors. This is a classic with Google Tag Manager. Everything looks right in preview mode, but the changes were never published, so real visitors never trigger the tag.
5. The form doesn't reload the page. A lot of modern forms submit without sending visitors to a "thank you" page. If tracking is waiting for a page that never loads, it never counts the lead.
6. GA4 sees it, Ads doesn't. Purchases or leads show in GA4 but never reach Ads. That's usually a linking, import, or setting problem between the two accounts, not a problem with your ads.
7. Timing. Google notes that after you link accounts or mark a key event, it can take 24 to 48 hours before import options appear in Ads. Ads also reports conversions by the date of the ad click, not the date of the lead, so recent days can still change.
What zero conversions costs you
This isn't just a reporting annoyance. It changes how your money gets spent.
Automated bidding is flying blind. Google's Smart Bidding strategies, like Maximize Conversions and target CPA, optimize toward conversions. Google says conversion measurement is what makes those strategies work. Without real conversion data, Ads has nothing to optimize toward.
You can't compare campaigns. If every campaign shows zero, you can't tell your best campaign from your worst. Budget decisions become guesses.
You can't measure return. Google lists understanding your ROI as one of the main reasons to measure conversions. Without it, you can't answer the most basic question: is this ad spend making me money?
You might shut off ads that work. Plenty of owners look at a zero, decide "Google Ads doesn't work for us," and stop, when the real issue was tracking all along.
How to check your own account
You can do a quick check in about ten minutes:
- In Google Ads, open Goals, then Conversions. Do you see any conversion actions? Are they marked Primary? Do any say "Inactive" or "No recent conversions"?
- In GA4, open Admin, then Events. Are your form, call, and booking events marked as key events?
- In GA4, check Admin, then Product links. Is your Google Ads account linked?
- Submit your own contact form, then check GA4's Realtime report. Did the event show up?
If any of those come up empty, you've found at least part of the problem.
For bigger accounts: when it's more than one fix
If your business gets thousands of ad clicks a month, runs Meta ads alongside Google, has multiple sites, or sells online, a zero (or a number you don't trust) usually points to bigger gaps. Calls aren't tied to campaigns. Leads in your CRM have no source. Ecommerce or multi-step funnel events are missing.
Our Enterprise Tracking and Analytics package is built for that. It starts at $2,000, with a custom quote after a short scoping call, and covers:
- Full GA4 and Google Tag Manager architecture across your sites and funnels
- Google Ads and Meta conversion import
- Call tracking and lead-source attribution
- Ecommerce and multi-step funnel events
- A Looker Studio dashboard
- Documentation and a walkthrough for your team
Fix it for a fixed price
For most small businesses, the GA4 Key Events and Conversion Tracking Setup covers it: $400 one-time. Forms, phone clicks, sign-ups, and bookings tracked as key events, each one tested, imported into Google Ads, and summarized in plain English.
