Why Claiming Your Google and Apple Business Listings Matters

Search your business name on Google. Then open Apple Maps and search again. Then try Bing.

What do you see? The right hours? The right phone number? Your current address? Or a listing that says "Claim this business" on a business you've owned for years?

For a lot of customers, your map listing is the first impression, before they ever see your website. Here's why it's worth owning.

Customers look you up before they show up

People check businesses online before they call, visit, or buy. BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey found that 97% of consumers read reviews for local businesses, and 71% used Google to read them, more than any other platform in the survey.

Every one of those lookups lands on a listing. If yours is unclaimed, out of date, or different on every app, that first impression works against you.

Your listing exists whether you claim it or not

This surprises a lot of owners. Google, Apple, and Bing can show a listing for your business even if you've never touched it.

Google explains that the information in Business Profiles comes from a mix of sources, including public information from the web, licensed third-party data, and contributions from users. That means hours, phone numbers, and even your address can be added or changed by people who aren't you.

Claiming and verifying your listing puts you in control of what it says. Google's own help docs note that you need to add or claim your business and verify your Business Profile to show and manage it on Search and Maps.

What goes wrong with unclaimed listings

Here's what an unclaimed or neglected listing can cost you:

  • Wrong hours. A customer drives over during what the listing says are open hours, and you're closed. They probably won't try again.
  • Old phone number. Calls go to a number you don't answer anymore.
  • Old address. You moved, but the map didn't.
  • Duplicate listings. Two or three versions of your business, each with slightly different details, and customers don't know which one is real.
  • No one can respond. If you don't control the listing, you can't update details, add photos, or reply to reviews.

None of these are dramatic. They just quietly send people somewhere else.

Why Apple and Bing matter too

Google gets most of the attention, but it's not the only map people use. Plenty of customers search in Apple Maps on their iPhone, or use Bing. Apple and Microsoft both let business owners claim and manage their listings for free, through Apple Business Connect and Bing Places.

If your Google listing is perfect but Apple Maps shows the wrong hours, iPhone users still see the wrong hours.

What "claimed and clean" looks like

You don't need anything fancy. A healthy setup means:

  1. You own the listing on Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect, and Bing Places, with access you control.
  2. Your details match everywhere. Same business name, address, phone, hours, website, and categories across all three.
  3. Old or duplicate listings are flagged for fixing, where each platform allows it.
  4. You know what changed and what's still waiting on the platform.

One honest note: no one can promise you a specific spot on Google or Apple Maps, and you should be wary of anyone who does. What you can control is making sure your listings are claimed, accurate, and consistent, so customers who look you up get the right information.

About verification wait times

Each platform has its own way of confirming you own the business. It might be a postcard, a phone call, an email, or a short video. Google, Apple, and Microsoft decide which method you get and how long it takes, so plan for some waiting.
